The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Robert F. Gordon (MCSN: 838988), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Headquarters Company, Headquarters and Service Battalion, Fifth Amphibious Corps, First Marine Force, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands, 26 June 1944. While a member of a party of four studying Japanese fortifications, Sergeant Gordon participated in an encounter in which two of his comrades were wounded. Unable to remove the more seriously wounded man from the trench in which he was resting due to the expected renewal of enemy action, he assisted the other man, who was partially blinded, to a field hospital and then proceeded in search of relief and medical assistance, traveling six miles to the headquarters of the Northern Troops and Landing Forces in spite of dusty, congested roads and the confusion incident to military operations, where he obtained an armed patrol and medical corpsman and led them to the scene of the action. His courage, tireless initiative and unwavering devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon Sergeant Gordon and the Unites States Naval Service.
