The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Joseph H. Good, Jr. (MCSN: 544590), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a member of Company A, Fifth Engineer Battalion, FIFTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces during the assault on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, 7 March 1945. On this date, Private First Class Good was working alongside and guiding a tractor in constructing a tank road through a narrow gulch which contained several enemy caves and strong points. When he had directed the tractor about half way through the gulch to a point thirty yards in front of our lines, the enemy in one of the caves threw several satchel charges of explosives at the tractor. Although knocked down and stunned by the explosion of these charges, Private First Class Good quickly regained his feet and, with complete disregard for his own personal safety, continued to direct the operation of the tractor until the road was completed. Again assaulted by enemy hand grenades while directing the withdrawal of his vehicle following completion of its task, he remained at his post and efficiently guided the tractor back to safety. His indomitable courage and initiative throughout were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
