The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Mortimer K. Gosline, Jr. (MCSN: 943140), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Flame Thrower Operator of Headquarters Company, First Battalion, Fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, 22 June 1945. When his company was pinned down by sniper and machine-gun fire from a fortified enemy position, Private First Class Gosline rushed forward and, using his flame thrower, reduced the hostile emplacements which were offering resistance. When, as his company continued over the top of a small hill, hostile forces on the reverse side opened fire which caused many casualties and held up the company on the crest of the ridge, he unhesitatingly advanced over the ridge and, after charging the enemy, annihilating many of them with his flame thrower, thereby disorganizing the remainder and enabling his company to advance and make penetration in the enemy’s defenses. Thereafter, he continued to advance with his company until he received two serious wounds. His outstanding courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
