The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Donald J. Glover (MCSN: 851207), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company F, Second Battalion, Twenty-third Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces at Saipan, Mariana Islands, on 9 July 1944. With his squad pinned down on three separate occasions by intense fire from well-concealed enemy emplacements, Private First Class Glover fearlessly exposed himself to the shattering barrage in order to locate the strong points and, unhesitatingly pressed forward across open terrain, single-handedly destroying each position with well-placed grenades. By his daring initiative, forceful and determined leadership and dauntless courage in the face of grave peril, Private First Class Glover served as an inspiration to his comrades during this and subsequent bitterly fought engagements during the campaign, and his constant devotion to duty throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
