The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Gunnery Sergeant Stanley A. Glogowsky (MCSN: 290405*), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Gunnery Sergeant of Reconnaissance Company, Headquarters Battalion, FOURTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces during the assault on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, 6 March 1945. After his Platoon Leader was wounded when the unit when was pinned down by severe hostile crossfire while advancing into a pocket of enemy resistance, Gunnery Sergeant Glogowsky immediately assumed commend and, maneuvering part of his unit to a more advantageous position, laid down a covering fire under which several of the wounded were evacuated. Undaunted by the hostile fire, he then went back into the pocket of resistance and worked tirelessly until all casualties from his unit and the adjoining platoon were withdrawn from the area. His outstanding leadership, courage and devotion to duty throughout this trying period were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
