The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Platoon Sergeant Raymond Gloede (MCSN: 380972), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company A, Amphibian Reconnaissance Battalion, FIFTH Amphibious Corps, Fleet Marine Force, during operations against enemy Japanese forces in the Mariana Islands Campaign, on 10 and 11 July 1944. Exercising skill and daring while serving with a unit performing particularly hazardous reconnaissance missions, Platoon Sergeant Gloede swam ashore at enemy-held Tinian Island on two occasions despite the grave risk of detection and expertly assisted in obtaining important intelligence information, thereby contributing materially to the success of the landings on Tinian by our assault forces. His resolute courage, initiative and unswerving devotion to duty reflect the highest credit on Corporal Gloede and the United States Naval Service.
