The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Leo K. Glinkman (MCSN: 337825), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company D, First Battalion, Second Marines, SECOND Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces at Tarawa, Gilbert Islands on 21 and 22 November 1943. Assigned the hazardous task of replenishing ammunition for his machine gun platoon which was operating with forward assault companies in the center of the island, Corporal Glinkman constantly exposed himself to intense hostile machine gun and sniper fire to cross the exposed airstrip, repeatedly making his way between his forward position and the battalion dump on the north coast. With his carrying party suffering casualties on each mission, he steadfastly continued his task of transporting vitally needed supplies, constantly inspiring his men to maintain their valiant efforts despite the tremendous odds. His dauntless perseverance, outstanding fortitude and cool courage in the face of grave danger contributed immeasurably to the success of the engagement and reflect the highest credit upon Corporal Glinkman and the United States Naval Service.
