The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Gunnery Sergeant Earle A. Gimber (MCSN: 230371), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company I, Third Battalion, Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Peleliu, Palau Islands, 21 September 1944. With enemy machine gun and mortar fire from a fortified position endangering his unit, Sergeant Gimber secured a rocket launcher and, standing exposed on a ridge in the face of enemy machine gun and rifle fire, succeeded in destroying the enemy position with two direct hits, thereby contributing greatly to the advance of his unit. His courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
