The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Lloyd W. Gill (MCSN: 300187), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Fire Group Leader of Company C, First Battalion, Twenty-seventh Marines, FIFTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, 28 February 1945. During an attack against enemy block-houses and pillboxes, Corporal Gill led supporting tanks beyond the front lines and destroyed the resisting hostile emplacements and, later that same day when the platoon leader and non-commissioned officer of his platoon became casualties, assumed command of the platoon and continued the attack. His courage and devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon Corporal Gill and the United States Naval Service.
