The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Gunnery Sergeant George T. Giles (MCSN: 300059), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company C, First Battalion, Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Peleliu, Palau Islands, 18 September 1944. When a hostile machine gun temporarily halted his Company’s attack, Gunnery Sergeant Giles courageously worked his way forward in the face of intense fire to a wounded man who was lying in front of the friendly lines and carried him to a place of safety in the rear. Returning to his position, he led a small group of man in an effective attack against the hostile machine gun and succeeded in destroying the gun killing four of the enemy. His coolness under fire, aggressive conduct and indomitable fighting spirit were contributing factors in the success of his company in quickly taking its objective. His courageous devotion to duty reflect great credit on Gunnery Sergeant Gilbo and the United States Naval Service.
