The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Robert Francis Garvey (MCSN: 350855), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as Squad Leader with the Second Battalion, Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Peleliu Island, Palau Group, 19 September 1944. Leading his group in support of a tank’s advance into a low area where extremely poor visibility made location of targets impossible and rendered its gunfire ineffective, Corporal Garvey voluntarily left the protection of the tank and unhesitatingly pressed forward in a hazardous region to spot targets and direct the tank’s gunfire. Successful in pointing out numerous Japanese-held caves, against which the tank was enabled to deliver devastating fire, Corporal Garvey vitally aided in the destruction of the entrenched enemy and their stronghold until he fell, mortally wounded. His cool, resourceful courage and unwavering devotion to duty reflect great credit upon Corporal Garvey and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
