The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Edward W. Galuska (MCSN: 971706), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Machine Gunner of Company G, Second Battalion, Twenty-second Marines, SIXTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, 13 May 1945. Finding himself confronting an enemy machine gunner already going into action while he himself was displacing forward, Private First Class Galuska unhesitatingly went into action and succeeded in annihilating the Japanese gunner. Fired on by another hostile gun, he skillfully turned his fire on the other weapon and put it out of action. When his own machine-gun was disabled by Japanese fire, seized one of the abandoned hostile machine guns and directed it against the enemy, thereby assisting his company to advance. His courage, initiative and devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon Private First Class Galuska and the United States Naval Service.
