The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Frank Gaboda (MCSN: 517833), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the Second Battalion, Twenty-Fifth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands, 10 July 1944. During an attack against the last desperate packet of Japanese resistance on the island’s northern shores, Private First Class Gaboda effectively covered the platoon advance with his Browning automatic rifle, boldly moving ahead of the unit through terrain which afforded ideal cover to the enemy and personally accounting for at least twenty Japanese before he fell, mortally wounded by a sniper while leading his group across an exposed position. By his aggressive determination and courageous fighting spirit, Private First Class Gaboda has pressed forward an attach which contributed materially to the success of our vital mission on this island, and his unwavering devotion to duty was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
