The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant John G. Fuller, Jr. (MCSN: 367342), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Platoon Guide of Company B, First Battalion, Twenty-first Marines, THIRD Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, 23 February 1946. When his platoon’s advance was halted by heavy fire from three Japanese pillboxes, Sergeant Fuller boldly made his way through sniper fire across forty yards of open terrain to an effectively-placed machine gun whose entire crew had become casualties. Finding the gun inoperable, he quickly repaired it and, putting the weapon into action, succeeded in neutralizing the fire of the three emplacements. By his outstanding courage and determination in the face of intense hostile fire, Sergeant Fuller enabled his platoon to continue the attack. His conduct throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
