The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Field Cook Carlo Fulgenzi (MCSN: 325167), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company D, First Engineer Battalion, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands, on 14 September 1942. Voluntarily joining a patrol to evacuate a Marine gunner who had been seriously wounded during an enemy attack on the preceding night, Field Cook Fulgenzi braved intense, close-in hostile sniper fire which had succeeded in thwarting previous rescue attempts and, despite the risk involved in approaching the casualty in his dangerous position, gallantly assisted in removing his wounded comrade. By his unselfish conduct and indomitable courage, Field Cook Fulgenzi upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
