The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Duane W. Frost (MCSN: 420548), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a Tank Leader, serving with Company B, Fourth Tank Battalion, FOURTH Marine Division, in operation against enemy Japanese forces during the battle for Tinian, Mariana Islands, from 24 July to 1 August 1944. Operating in support of two infantry companies and spear-heading a drive through a deep terrain corridor south of Tinian Town on the afternoon of 21 July, Sergeant Frost halted his tank in a clearing to enable the infantry commander to reorganize his company. Attacked by Japanese forces, he remained in the open and stood his ground during the forty-five minutes of fighting which ensued and, using machine guns due to the lack of heavy caliber ammunition, helped to annihilate approximately two hundred of the enemy, thereby preventing the Japanese from setting up a strong defense in this strategic area, and saving the lives of many Marines. His courageous devotion to duty and relentless fighting spirit were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
