The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Otto B. Freeman, Jr. (MCSN: 870742), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as an Automatic Rifleman serving with the First Battalion, Twenty-Third Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on the Island of Tinian in the Marianas, on 1 August 1944. Spotting the source of enemy fire directed on his company’s left flank during a relentless advance upon hostile positions, Private First class Freeman unhesitatingly moved into clear view of two machine guns and, opening fire with bold aggressiveness, maintained a steady, accurate stream of deadly bullets on the hostile emplacements and succeeded in destroying one and damaging the other before he fell, wounded in both legs. Although unable to move, he gallantly guarded tow other Marines who were serious casualties, holding his vigil with indomitable fortitude despite weakening pain and exhaustion until both he and his companions were evacuated. By his alert readiness, daring initiative and tenacious determination throughout a period of fierce hostilities, Private First Class Freeman contributed materially to the success of our operations against this vital Japanese stronghold, and his undaunted courage and valiant conduct in the face of savage opposition upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
