The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal David Freeman (MCSN: 838945), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the Second Battalion, Tenth Marines, SECOND Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on the Island of Saipan in the Marianas, on 20 June 1944. When devastating explosions and resultant fires occurred in a vital ammunition dump, Corporal Freeman unhesitatingly risked his life to enter the danger area where large quantities of dynamite, artillery and mortar ammunition were stored and, fighting the flames with determined initiative, worked desperately in a valiant attempt to isolate the burning area until instantly killed by a second tremendous explosion. Corporal Freeman’s prompt action, indomitable fortitude and cool courage in the face of extreme peril reflect the highest credit upon himself and upon the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
