The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Forrest W. Fraley, Jr. (MCSN: 481704), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Demolitionist and Flame Thrower Operator of company B, First Battalion, Eighteenth Marines (Engineer), SECOND Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands, 3 July 1944. In the face of intense hostile small-arms fire, Private First Class Fraley approached an enemy-held cave and, successfully placing a demolitions charge, neutralized the Japanese inside. Immediately after, he continued his duties with a flame thrower and, neutralizing seven enemy-held caves during the day, cleared out approximately one hundred of the Japanese, thereby allowing our units to advance. His courage and devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon Private First class Fraley and the United States Naval Service.
