The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Robert L. Foss (MCSN: 346833), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company B, Third Battalion, Second Marines, SECOND Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces at Tarawa, Gilbert Islands, 20 and 21 November 1943. Assuming command of his squad when his commanding officer became a casualty during the first day of the assault, Private First Class Foss diligently performed his duties throughout the day and ensuing night. During the attack on the following day, he discovered an organized enemy position in the rear of our forward elements which was threatening his company’s left flank end, despite heavy enemy machine-gun fire, led his squad in an attack with hand grenades and destroyed the hostile position. His courage and devotion to duty throughout reflect the highest credit upon Private First Class Foss and the United States Naval Service.
