Commanding General, Fleet Marine Force Pacific: Serial 00420

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant French R. Fogle (MCSN: 0-14369), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Commanding Officer of Company E, Second battalion, Third Marines, THIRD Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Guam, Mariana Islands, 9 August 1944. When five enemy tanks penetrated his sector during darkness and inflicted numerous casualties, First Lieutenant Fogle received orders to move his company from the area under attack by a large enemy force supported by the tanks. Walking to within twenty feet of the hostile vehicles, he succeeded in organizing his men for a movement to a more tenable area and, by his cool courage and inspiring leadership, enabled the entire company to make an orderly displacement to a wooded hill four hundred yards distant. His devotion to duty was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
