The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Edwin B. Fletcher (MCSN: 973081), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company I, 3d Battalion, 1st Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, 23 May 1945. When hostile artillery fire ignited white phosphorus shells in a mortar ammunition dump and caused the detonation of high explosive projectiles, Private First Class Fletcher worked unhesitatingly with another Marine to remove ammunition from the area and thus alleviate the danger to personnel in the vicinity. Although suffering severe burns on his hands, he continued to clear the shells from the fire until all danger to his comrades had ceased. His outstanding courage and grave concern for the safety of others were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
