The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class William P. Flemen (MCSN: 535952), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Gunner in a platoon of Company C, First Battalion, Twenty-ninth Marines, SIXTH Marine Division, during action against Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, 15 May 1945. When his squad leader was wounded by a burst of fire from an enemy machine gun which had pinned down the assault platoons, Private First Class Flemen quickly manned his leader’s un and, despite intense and accurate automatic fire, laid down a devastating barrage in support of the assault units, maintain steady fire against the enemy until he, himself, was fatally wounded by a Japanese mortar shell. By his courageous initiative and prompt action, Private First class Flemen had neutralized hostile positions and had enabled his company to secure its objective with a minimum of casualties. His valiant devotion to duty and indomitable fighting spirit were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
