The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Norman O. Fiske (MCSN: 454607), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as Runner of company B, First Battalion, Twenty-ninth Marines, SIXTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Motobu Peninsula, Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, 12 April 1945. When his company was pinned down on top of a barren ridge by intense automatic weapons fire Corporal Fiske voluntarily made his way to a point of vantage from which he could observe the enemy. Locating an enemy 25-mm. cannon, he immediately reported to his Battalion Commander and volunteered to guide the artillery forward observation team to an observation post from which fire data could be obtained. Making numerous trips over fire-swept terrain between the forward observer and radio operator to relay the direction and adjustment of artillery fire, he aided materially in the destruction of the enemy weapon. His courage, initiative and devotion to duty throughout reflect the highest credit upon Corporal Fiske and the United States Naval Service.
