The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Wayne R. Fish (MCSN: 338669), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Tank Commander of Company B, Fourth Tank Battalion, FOURTH Marine Division, in operations against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands, from 15 June to 9 July, 1944. Driving his tank selected by the Platoon Leader as the command tank, Sergeant Fish advanced into enemy territory under heavy fire to attack three dual-purpose gun positions. By skillfully maneuvering his tank, he enabled his gunner to aim accurately, thereby destroying two positions and crippling the third. Abandoning the tank after one hit had immobilized it and another had set fire to the turret, he helped cover his crew with his pistol and assisted his Platoon Leader in conducting the crew back to our lines about five hundred yards away. His courage, devotion to duty and relentless fighting spirit upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
