The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant Wilford A. Fischer (MCSN: 0-25078), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a Naval Gunfire Spotter, attached to the Second Joint Assault Gunfire Spotter, attached to the Second Joint Assault Signal Company, SECOND Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands, 16 June 1944. Braving enemy fire during a hostile counterattack, Second Lieutenant Fischer advanced through our lines into Japanese territory to observe an enemy artillery battery which had been firing into our lines inflicting casualties and damaging our supporting artillery. Determining the location of the hostile artillery, he directed two destroyers to a position from which to shell the objective, thereby contributing directly to the silencing of the enemy battery. His courage and devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon Second Lieutenant Fischer and the United States Naval Service.
