The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Walter F. Fischer (MCSN: 801712), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Rifle Squad Leader of Company L, Third Battalion, Fourth Marines, SIXTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces during the assault on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, 19 May, 1945. Under an intense hostile mortar and artillery barrage, Corporal Fischer efficiently moved his squad to the crest of a hill and effected the relief of another unit. Although wounded during this movement, he refused evacuation in order to remain with his men and direct their activities and, despite heavy casualties and continuing enemy artillery fire, moved about throughout the night to distribute grenades and direct the evacuation of the wounded. On three occasions, Corporal Fischer daringly exposed himself to hostile fire in order to report enemy mortar and artillery positions to his Platoon Leader and, when wounded a second time, again refused evacuation and returned to his squad where he remained until ordered to the rear the following morning. His outstanding courage, indomitable fighting spirit and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
