The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private William L. Feuquay (MCSN: 959436), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Rifleman in a platoon of Company A, First Battalion, First Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, 3 May 1946. Striving to protect his rifle platoon from a directly opposing enemy heavy machine gun which was causing heavy casualties, Private Feuquay, acting without orders, daringly crawled forward of his platoon’s front lines and single-handedly engaged the hostile machine gun with direct rifle fire. For several minutes he continued to fire at a rapid rate into the Japanese emplacement and, by drawing all enemy fire upon himself, enabled the remainder of his platoon to move to a more protected position and reorganize to continue the attack successfully. Fatally wounded as he completed his mission, Private Feuquay, by his courageous devotion to duty in the face of overwhelming odds, upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
