The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Albert F. Ferguson (MCSN: 349557), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the Third Battalion, Sixth Marines, SECOND Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands, 8 July 1944. Valiantly opening fire on a group of Japanese whom he observed crawling towards the battalion switchboard where he stood watch during a pre-dawn attack, Corporal Ferguson warned other men in the area of their approach and, as the enemy hurled hand grenades into his position, countered with a continuous stream of highly affective fire which diverted their attention from the switchboard. When his ammunition was almost exhausted, he voluntarily left his post and, moving through a perilously exposed area, returned to his foxhole for additional rounds. Mortally wounded in carrying out his dangerous mission, Corporal Ferguson, by his ceaseless vigilance and daring courage, had succeeded in staving off the enemy until their assault could be turned back, and his heroic devotion to duty throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
