The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private Richard L. Fenton (MCSN: 552687), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Rifleman in Company E, Second Battalion, Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, 9 June 1945. When his rifle platoon encountered heavy enemy machine-gun and rifle fire, Private Fenton immediately assumed the duties of his squad leader who had become a casualty and, acting with great courage and coolness, skillfully directed his men across an open field and up a cave-infested ridge in the face of accurate hostile fire. After successfully establishing his squad on the ridge, he was reconnoitering for a covered route of approach for his company when mortally wounded by Japanese fire. His heroic actions despite great opposition contributed greatly toward the subsequent success of his company in this vital area and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
