The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Frederick S. Fay (MCSN: 284294), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Demolitions Corporal of Company D, Second Battalion, Twenty-ninth Marines, SIXTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, on May 18, 1945. During an assault on a key terrain feature, Corporal Fay was among the first to proceed up a hill and, as he reached the crest, was seriously wounded in the right leg by an enemy grenade. Remaining in the midst of heavy grenade and small-arms fire despite his wound, he directed fire at the hostile position until he ran out of ammunition. Although wounded a second time, Corporal Fay went back to pick up another weapon and additional ammunition and, returning to his former position, resumed the fire fight during which he was wounded in the chest. Not until he had sustained this third wound did he consent to be taken to the rear for medical attention. By his bold initiative and indomitable fighting spirit, Corporal Fay upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
