The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Joseph G. Farrell (MCSN: 526236), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Reconnaissance Company, Headquarters Battalion, FOURTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, 17 February 1945. Despite heavy artillery and automatic weapons fire which caused numerous casualties to those with whom he was working, Corporal Farrell carried out his mission of reconnoitering the landing beaches and installation of the island and obtained valuable information which was of vital importance and was subsequently responsible for the saving of many lives. His cool courage and unselfish devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
