The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Harlan E. Fagg (MCSN: 324243), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Battery A, Second 155-mm. Howitzer Battalion, Fleet Marine Force, Pacific in action against enemy Japanese forces at Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands on February 12, 1945. While his battery was receiving heavy enemy counter battery fire, Private First Class Fagg boldly ran through a raging ammunition fire to rescue a bulldozer operator who had been overcome by the heat and smoke while pushing dirt over the blazing ammunition. Then, he mounted the bulldozer and continued to extinguish the raging fires which threatened the entire battery area. By his daring initiative, cool courage and aggressive spirit, Private First Class Fagg upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
