The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Werner H. Eubanks (MCSN: 251387), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as Leader of a Machine Gun Section of Company B, First Battalion, Twenty-first Marines, THIRD Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on the Asan-Adelup Beachhead, Guam, Mariana Islands, on the night of 26 July 1944. When the enemy penetrated the lines in several places and inflicted heavy casualties in his section during a coordinated Japanese night attack against the entire beachhead, Sergeant Eubanks replaced a wounded gunner and personally manned a machine gun against continued hostile attacks. With this position becoming untenable as the enemy advanced, he skillfully withdrew his section a short distance to the rear and persevered in his fight against the Japanese until all except three of his men became casualties and both guns of his section were put out of action by hostile mortar fire. With the three remaining men, Sergeant Eubanks reported to the nearest rifle platoon and, at dawn voluntarily served as an Automatic Rifleman in the counterattack which restored the lines. His courage under fire and inspiring leadership throughout were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
