The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Albert J. Estergall (MCSN: 304272), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company B, First Battalion, Twenty-fourth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands, 6 July 1944. Although painfully wounded by hostile fire during an attack against the enemy entrenched in a heavily wooded area, Sergeant Estergall courageously led his squad throughout the assault, closing in on the enemy and annihilating hostile troops in their foxholes. His gallantry, leadership and disregard for his personal safety reflect the highest credit upon Sergeant Estergall and the United States Naval Service.
