The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal James H. Enoch (MCSN: 465398), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Supply Sergeant of Company H, Third Battalion, Twenty-sixth Marines, FIFTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, 15 March 1945. When a platoon had suffered many casualties in an area where evacuation was impossible following a vicious fire fight with the enemy, Corporal Enoch volunteered to supervise the construction of a road which tanks could use to evacuate the wounded. Exposing himself to constant hostile fire, he directed an armored bulldozer in constructing the road and then guided a tank to the casualties who were all evacuated except one. Observing that it is impossible for the tanks to reach the remaining casualty, Corporal Enoch ran the rest of the distance across the fire lane to the wounded man where he himself was wounded by enemy fire and later evacuated. His initiative, courage and unselfish devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
