The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Elmuth D. English (MCSN: 841023), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the FOURTH Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands, 16 June 1944. Reporting the presence of a Japanese soldier upon whom he was unable to bring effective fire to bear, Private First Class English subsequently returned to the area with a group of men in an effort to track the aggressor down. As he located and approached the enemy’s position, he saw a Marine from another unit shot down from ambush by the Japanese and, handing his carbine to one of his group, dropped to a prone position and started crawling to the side of the wounded man but was instantly shot and killed as he reached his comrade, Private First Class English’s fearless initiative, aggressive determination and cool courage throughout a difficult and dangerous situation upheld the highest traditions of the Unites States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
