The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Platoon Sergeant Kennith J. Englert (MCSN: 335753), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company E, Third Battalion, Twenty-fifth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands, on 15 June 1944. Unhesitatingly volunteering to land a patrol in an attack against a heavily fortified hostile emplacement retarding the advance of his company, Platoon Sergeant Englert fearlessly pressed forward under the intense barrage in a determines effort to wipe out the resistance. Seriously wounded when his platoon was pinned down before reaching the strong point, he pressed the attack alone, thereby enabling his men to maneuver to a more favorable striking position. Concerned only for the safety of his men, he steadfastly refused evacuation following the bitter engagement, remaining in the area until other wounded had been cared for and evacuated before submitting to medical treatment. By his daring initiative, persistent aggressiveness and outstanding fortitude in the face of tremendous odds, Platoon Sergeant Englert contributed essential to the success of the engagement, and his selfless devotion to duty throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
