The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Platoon Sergeant Paul A. Engle (MCSN: 404096), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Tank Commander of Company B, Third Tank Battalion, THIRD Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, on 1 March 1945. When his tank received damaging hits and one crew member was wounded by fire from well-concealed enemy positions during an advance on a hostile strong point, Platoon Sergeant Engle engaged the enemy in a fire fight and kept his tank an action for a period of five hours to destroy four enemy tanks, several pillboxes and numerous fortified positions, retiring only after all his ammunition had been expended, His heroic actions and courageous devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
