The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Clyde E. England (MCSN: 894378), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a member of a Combat Patrol of Company E, Second Battalion, Twenty-third Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Tinian, Mariana Islands, 30 July 1944. When his patrol was ambushed and encircled, two members killed and his leader severely wounded, Private First Class England remained with the helpless man until nightfall despite constant exposure to heavy Japanese fire. After removing him to a place of safety, Private First Class England made his way back to the company and guided a stretcher party back to effect his evacuation. His gallant conduct in aiding a companion at the risk of his own life and his unwavering devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
