The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Albert C. Elliott (MCSN: 354839), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company A, First Battalion, fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Peleliu, Palau Islands, 16 September 1944. During an attack across fourteen hundred yards of open airfield continuously subjected to an intense hostile artillery, mortar and machine-gun barrage, Private First class Elliot bravely remained forward of his platoon and, leading the way for his comrades to follow, succeeded in crossing the open area. Discovering an enemy pillbox delivering intense fire on his platoon’s left flank, he rushed forward directly into the path of the enemy fire and throwing three hand grenades in to the fortification, killed thirteen of the Japanese defenders and knocked out a machine-gun, thereby contributing materially to the successful accomplishment of his battalion’s mission. His outstanding courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
