The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Ray K. Edwards (MCSN: 310330), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a member of the FIRST Marine Division, in action while operating a Naval Radio in the Island Base Command Net, Solomon Islands Area, on 12 September 1942. With courageous disregard for his own safety, Corporal Edwards steadfastly remained at his post during an intense enemy Japanese aerial bombardment in order to receive an important message coming in at the time. His fearless devotion to the performance of a vital task at the cost of his life was an inspiration to the remaining men of this command and in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Services. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
