The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Frederick Edenharter (MCSN: 441851), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as an Acting Squad Leader of Company L, Third Battalion, Twenty-ninth Marines, FIFTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, 31 May 1945. When his company’s advance against strongly-defended hostile positions was halted by heavy fire emanating from well-concealed enemy positions which could not be located, Private First class Edenharter volunteered to reconnoiter the ground forward of his company’s position and, despite the extreme personal danger involved, courageously moved forward alone over fire-swept terrain for a distance of two hundred yards. After reaching a point within a few yards of the hostile defenses he located the concealed machine-gun emplacements and, returning through enemy fire to his company’s lines, enabled his unit to bring concentrated fire on the Japanese guns and continue their advance. Private First Class Edenharter’s initiative, bravery and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
