The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Truman D. Eastis, Jr. (MCSN: 321810), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Leader of a Machine-gun Section while serving with the Second Battalion, Second Marines, SECOND Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on the Island of Saipan in the Marianas, on 27 June 1944. Skillfully maneuvering himself into a strategic forward position when his platoon was pinned down by a devastating concentration of enemy fire during a general advance, Corporal Eastis fought tenaciously to free his companions from the merciless barrages and, attacking the enemy positions with resolute determination, persistently hurled powerful hand grenades until he succeeded in dislodging the Japanese troops. An indomitable fighter, Corporal Eastis, by his intrepid initiative, sustained aggressiveness and cool courage in the face of terrific opposition, enabled his platoon to reach its objective without undue delay, thereby contributing materially to the ultimate conquest of this vital Japanese stronghold, and his unwavering devotion to duty throughout a period of fierce hostilities was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
