The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Clarence E. Easter (MCSN: 358676), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a Fire Group Leader of a Rifle Platoon serving with the Second Battalion, Ninth Marines, THIRD Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese force at Fonte Hill, Guam, Mariana Islands, 25 July 1944. When a determined enemy counterattack disorganized his platoon and forced it to withdraw to a defensive position, Private First Class Easter, with two members of his group, courageously remained in front of the lines to cover the withdrawal and prevent the Japanese from reorganizing for another attack. Despite intense, bitter opposition, he tenaciously held his ground and delivered accurate and effective fire on the enemy until mortally wounded. Private First Class Easter’s splendid initiative, indomitable fighting spirit and self-sacrificing devotion to duty under extremely perilous conditions greatly aided his platoon in establishing a strong defense and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
