The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class John F. Dunne (MCSN: 1078464), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving with Company G, Third Battalion, First Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Reinforced), in action against enemy aggressor forces in Korea on 25 September 1950. When his company was pinned down by heavy enemy machine gun and rifle fire during the attack on Seoul, Private First Class Dunne unhesitatingly exposed himself to intense hostile fire to stand in an open street firing his rifle and throwing hand grenades to cover the evacuation of ten wounded Marines. By his exceptional courage and devotion to duty, he enabled the casualties to receive prompt medical attention and contributed to the success of the evacuation without further casualties, thereby upholding the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
