The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant William J. Duncan (MCSN: 337191), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Squad Leader in an Assault Platoon of Company K, Third Battalion, First Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Reinforced), in action against enemy Japanese forces on Peleliu, Palau Islands, on 15 September 1944. Attacking with his platoon against strong enemy positions defending the north end of the beach, Sergeant Duncan skillfully and boldly carried out his mission to protect the right flank of the platoon. Leading his men in a fierce assault, he met the enemy in furious hand-to-hand combat, killing many and driving them from their foxholes and trenches. Although he sustained a severe leg wound during the defense of the newly won positions, he steadfastly refused evacuation and continued to direct his squad against harassing enemy counterattacks until, weakened by loss of blood, he was evacuated to the rear for medical aid. His outstanding courage, valiant fighting spirit and unwavering devotion to duty in the face of grave danger reflect great credit upon Sergeant Duncan and the United States Naval Service.
