The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant Carter W. Dullanty (MCSN: 0-16123), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Officer in Charge of a Section of two 75-mm. Halftracks of Weapons Company, Twenty-eighth Marines, FIFTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces during the assault on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, from 19 February to 26 March 1945. Perceiving immediately upon landing on 19 February, that a Battalion was receiving heavy fire from hostile gun emplacements on Mount Suribachi, First Lieutenant Dullanty skillfully maneuvered his guns under enemy fire and, placing them in position, commenced a bombardment. Undaunted by the intense hostile fire, he raced back and forth between the weapons to designate targets to his crews and, by quickly bringing fire to bear on the hostile positions, materially aided in the neutralization of the damaging enfilade fire, thereby enabling the landing team, which came ashore in the waves immediately after him, to accomplish a difficult turning maneuver and establish a firing line on the southern front. His outstanding courage and devotion to duty throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
