The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Philip V. Maywald (AFSN: 0-70153), United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a Forward Air Controller in Southeast Asia on 6 March 1968. On that date, while piloting an unarmed O-2A observation aircraft, Captain Maywald directed a series of six strikes against a hostile petroleum storage area. Flying in a heavily defended area, he pressed the attack, despite intense anti-aircraft fire, until he stretched his fuel to the limit and darkness fell. As a direct result of his efforts, a large stockpile of petroleum products were destroyed. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Captain Maywald reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.

Maywald (AFSN: 0-70153), United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as an O-2A Pilot in Southeast Asia on 17 January 1968. On that date, flying at night in adverse weather conditions, he subjected himself to intense and accurate anti-aircraft fire while directing fighter aircraft against a hostile truck convoy. Captain Maywald voluntarily exposed his aircraft to create a safer environment for the attacking fighter aircraft. His aggressiveness and professionalism at very high personal risk resulted in a severe loss of logistics equipment and supplies by the hostile forces. The professional competence, aerial skill and devotion to duty displayed by Captain Maywald reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Title 10, Section 8742, United States Code, takes pleasure in presenting the Air Force Cross to Captain Philip Van Maywald (AFSN: 0-70153), United States Air Force, for extraordinary heroism in military operations against an opposing armed force while serving as an O-2A Pilot with the 23d Tactical Air Support Squadron, 56th Air Commando Wing, in action in Southeast Asia on 21 May 1968. On that date, Captain Maywald braved an intense and deadly barrage of hostile gunfire for over two hours while he controlled the successful rescue of a fellow pilot who had been downed by anti-aircraft fire deep within hostile territory. Despite the great personal risk involved to his own life, Captain Maywald, with undaunted determination, indomitable courage, and professional skill, repeatedly made low passes over the rescue scene in his light unarmored observation aircraft. At times, he flew within fifty feet of the hostile forces to determine their positions and to deliberately draw their fire on his aircraft. Due to his courage, persistence, and professional skill the downed pilot was safely recovered. Through his extraordinary heroism, superb airmanship, and aggressiveness, Captain Maywald reflected the highest credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
