The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Philip V. Maywald (AFSN: 0-70153), United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as an O-2A Pilot in Southeast Asia on 17 January 1968. On that date, flying at night in adverse weather conditions, he subjected himself to intense and accurate anti-aircraft fire while directing fighter aircraft against a hostile truck convoy. Captain Maywald voluntarily exposed his aircraft to create a safer environment for the attacking fighter aircraft. His aggressiveness and professionalism at very high personal risk resulted in a severe loss of logistics equipment and supplies by the hostile forces. The professional competence, aerial skill and devotion to duty displayed by Captain Maywald reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
